Righteousness – Devotional

1 Corinthians 1:30 “Of God are ye in Christ Jesus who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.”

The first of the great blessings that Jesus our wisdom reveals to us in Himself is righteousness. It is not hard to see why this has to be the first. There can be no real prosperity or progress in a nation, a home, or a soul unless there is peace. Sin had disturbed our all our relations with God; we were out of harmony with ourselves, with men, and with God. The first requirement of a salvation that would really bring blessedness to us was peace. Peace can only come with right. Where everything is as God would have it, In God’s order and in harmony with His will, there peace can reign. Jesus came to restore peace on earth and in the soul by restoring righteousness. Because Jesus is Melchizedek, King of peace (Heb. 7:2). He fulfills the promise of the prophets (Is.32:1, 17) “A king shall reign in righteousness . . . And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.” God made Jesus unto us righteousness. We are made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor. 5:21).

Rom. 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Jer. 23:6 “This is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness.” Is. 45:24 “In the Lord have I righteousness and strength.” 1 Cor. 1:30 “Christ Jesus, who of God was made unto us . . . righteousness.” 2 Cor 5:21 “That we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Phil. 3:9 “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.”

See how inseparable righteousness and life in Jesus are from each other: Rom. 5:18 “The righteousness of one . . . came upon all men unto justification of life.” Rom 5:17 “They which receive . . . the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.” Do you understand what a deep meaning there is in Romans 1:17? “. . . . the righteous . . . . shall live by faith.”

Now you cannot just be content with thinking of the imputed righteousness as your robe; but putting on Jesus and seeking to be wrapped up in, to be clothed with Jesus and His life, you start to feel how completely the righteousness of God is yours, because the Lord Jesus is our righteousness. Before you have an understanding of this truth, you know it has been hard to wear your white robe all day, But once you understand that the living Jesus Christ Himself is your righteousness, and that He watches over you, and keeps you, and loves you as His own; then all of a sudden it is not an impossibility to walk all day long in the loving presence of God with which He covers His children.

Abide in Jesus as your righteousness. Nothing can enable you to dwell and walk in the light of God, without even the shadow of a cloud between you and Him except the habitual abiding in Jesus as your righteousness. Walk worthy of that calling, yield yourself to the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the wonderful grace that allows you to draw near to God clothed in divine righteousness.

Live your daily life in the full consciousness of being righteous in God’s sight as an object of delight and pleasure in Jesus. Remember, He is made to you righteousness. This will keep you in perfect peace.

Psalm 45:7 “Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” Joy and gladness will be your portion!
